What the numbers mean

How it was measured. dB Drag Racing competition scores measured inside the vehicle with the TermLab metering system: 181.0 dB world record (2013) and 184.9 dB (2019). Weighting not stated. These are dB Drag Racing Association results, not Guinness World Records.

dB Drag Racing rewards whoever can produce the loudest sound inside a vehicle, measured with a metering system called TermLab. Record vehicles are heavily modified, and the score is a measurement inside the cabin, not a level anyone could listen to.

In 2013 Craig Butler's heavily modified Astro van scored 181.0 dB at Spring Break Nationals, beating the previous record of 180.2 dB from October 2012. In 2019 Alan Dante qualified with 184.3 dB and then scored 184.9 dB.

Protecting your hearing

Nobody sits in these vehicles during a record run. For ordinary car audio, keep the volume at a level where you can still hear traffic and sirens.

Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.

Compared with sounds nearby

Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).

  • Space Shuttle launch (142–155 dB max): this has about 2,786× its sound energy and sounds about 10.9× as loud.
  • Saturn V launch (170–175 dB max): this has about 11× its sound energy and sounds about 2.1× as loud.
