What the numbers mean

How it was measured. Guinness World Records figures, C-weighted. The record pages do not state the microphone distance or whether the figure is a peak or maximum level.

Neville Sharp set the men's record of 112.4 dB in Darwin, Northern Territory, in July 2021. Guinness World Records says he was taught to burp by his older sister at six and prepared for the attempt for over five years, partly because finding the correct measuring equipment was hard. The record had previously been held by an Englishman for over 10 years.

Kimberly Winter of Springfield, Virginia, set the women's record of 108 dB (C-weighted) on 12 March 2026, beating her own earlier record. C-weighting counts low frequencies more fully than the A-weighting used for most everyday noise figures, so these numbers are not directly comparable with dBA readings.

How long is safe?

NIOSH recommends no more than 51 s a day at 112.4 dBA (2 min 22 s at 108). OSHA's legal limit is 22 min. This is a maximum, so a time limit based on it is a worst case. This level is not A-weighted, so the times are approximate: low-pitched sound measures lower in dBA.

Times are for a whole day’s exposure, with the rest of the day quiet. The workplace limits were written for adults at work, not for children. Work out a mixed day with the noise dose calculator.

Protecting your hearing

A record burp is a one-off sound. If someone attempts one next to your ear, step back: sound level falls quickly with distance.

Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.

Compared with sounds nearby

Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).
