How loud is a live band in a pub?

103–105dBA5 m from the loudspeakers

A live band in a pub typically plays at about 103 to 105 dB. The UK HSE describes 105 dB as a not unusual level for a pub band and reports a venue measuring 103 dB at 5 m from the loudspeakers.

What the numbers mean

How it was measured. HSE case study measurement 5 m from the loudspeakers in a live music venue (103 dB), and HSE's typical level for a pub band (105 dB); A-weighted per HSE convention.

Small rooms with hard surfaces and a band a few metres away make pub gigs loud. HSE explains that 5 minutes at 105 dB, a not unusual level for a pub band, gives the same noise dose as an hour at 94 dB or 4 hours at 88 dB.

In an HSE case study, a venue hosting live bands five nights a week measured 103 dB at a reference position 5 m from the loudspeakers. After moving the stage, adding absorption and an acoustic screen, and capping bands at 103 dB, bar staff exposure fell from 92 to 86 dB.

How long is safe?

NIOSH recommends no more than 4 min 43 s a day at 105 dBA (7 min 30 s at 103). OSHA's legal limit is 1 h.

Times are for a whole day’s exposure, with the rest of the day quiet. The workplace limits were written for adults at work, not for children. Work out a mixed day with the noise dose calculator.

Protecting your hearing

Stand back from the speakers and the front of the stage, use filtered earplugs, and take breaks outside. Venues can cap levels with a limiter and move speakers above the dance floor.

Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.

Compared with sounds nearby

Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).

  • Drum kit (93.4–109.9 dBA): this has about 1.7× its sound energy and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Marching band (91.2–112.3 dBA): this has about 1.7× its sound energy and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Tank (moving) (96–117 dBA): it has about 1.8× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Piccolo (96–118 dBA): it has about 2× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Normal conversation (55–70 dBA): this has about 14,125× its energy and sounds about 17.8× as loud.

Questions

How long can I listen to a pub band?

HSE notes that 5 minutes at 105 dB gives the same dose as 4 hours at 88 dB.

Can pubs make live music quieter?

Yes. In an HSE case study, moving the stage, adding absorption and an acoustic screen and capping bands at 103 dB cut bar staff exposure from 92 to 86 dB.
