How loud is an air compressor?
The FHWA construction noise database gives a measured maximum of 78 dBA at 50 ft (15 m) for air compressors, averaged over 18 samples, and the Federal Transit Administration lists 81 dBA as typical at 50 ft.

What the numbers mean
How it was measured. Site air compressors: measured Lmax at 50 ft averaged over 18 samples (FHWA RCNM, 78 dBA) and typical level at 50 ft from the FTA planning table (81 dBA).
Construction air compressors are among the quieter items in the FHWA table: their measured 78 dBA at 50 ft is below the project specification of 80 dBA. The handbook notes that compressors run at a fairly constant level but are often relocated, so the nearest neighbours change as the job moves.
Level rises quickly as you approach: these are 50 ft figures, not the level beside the machine.
How long is safe?
Below 85 dBA, the level NIOSH allows for a full 8-hour day.
| Level | NIOSH limit (85 dBA, 3 dB rule) | OSHA limit (90 dBA, 5 dB rule) | UK/EU 80 dB(A) action value reached after | UK/EU 85 dB(A) action value reached after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 78 dBA | No limit | No limit | Not reached in 24 h | Not reached in 24 h |
| 81 dBA | No limit | No limit | 6 h 21 min | Not reached in 24 h |
Times are for a whole day’s exposure, with the rest of the day quiet. The workplace limits were written for adults at work, not for children. Work out a mixed day with the noise dose calculator.
Protecting your hearing
Site compressors away from where people work and keep their acoustic covers closed. Pneumatic tools powered by the compressor are usually much louder than the compressor itself.
Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.
Compared with sounds nearby
Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).
- City bus (75.3–76 dBA): this has about 2.4× its sound energy and sounds about 1.3× as loud.
- Vacuum cleaner (62–90 dBA): this has about 2.2× its sound energy and sounds about 1.3× as loud.
- Electric lawn mower (82 dBA): it has about 1.8× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Street sweeper (82 dBA max): it has about 1.8× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Normal conversation (55–70 dBA): this has about 50× its energy and sounds about 3.2× as loud.
