How loud is a garbage disposal?

67–93dBAat the sink (distance not stated)

A garbage disposal (food waste disposer) is about 67 to 93 dBA according to the 'Counting Decibels' table in Environmental Health Perspectives. A Purdue University noise chart lists it at 80 dB.

What the numbers mean

How it was measured. Under-sink food waste disposer running, from a compiled household table (67 to 93 dBA); a Purdue chart gives 80 dB, weighting not stated. Distances not stated.

Disposers are loud because a motor spins a grinding plate inside a metal chamber bolted to the sink, so the sink itself acts as a sounding board. Hard scraps such as bones make it louder than soft food. The Environmental Health Perspectives table lists food disposals at 67 to 93 dBA, a range that overlaps power tools at the top end.

Purdue University's 'Noise Sources and Their Effects' chart lists a garbage disposal at 80 dB (weighting not stated) and groups garbage disposals with dishwashers and an average factory around the 80 dB mark.

Because the noise is carried through the sink, how the unit is mounted and whether it is insulated affects how loud it sounds.

How long is safe?

NIOSH recommends no more than 1 h 16 min a day at 93 dBA (no limit at the quiet end, 67). OSHA's legal limit is 5 h 17 min.

Times are for a whole day’s exposure, with the rest of the day quiet. The workplace limits were written for adults at work, not for children. Work out a mixed day with the noise dose calculator.

Protecting your hearing

Runs are short, so hearing protection is not usually needed. Choose an insulated model if noise matters and avoid putting hard items such as bones down it.

Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.

Compared with sounds nearby

Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).

  • City bus (75.3–76 dBA): this has about 2.7× its sound energy and sounds about 1.4× as loud.
  • Vacuum cleaner (62–90 dBA): this has about 2.5× its sound energy and sounds about 1.3× as loud.
  • Piano (60–105 dBA): it has about 1.8× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Nail gun (83 dBA): it has about 2× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Normal conversation (55–70 dBA): this has about 56× its energy and sounds about 3.4× as loud.

Questions

Why is my garbage disposal so loud?

The motor and grinding chamber vibrate the metal sink. Levels of 67 to 93 dBA are listed in the Environmental Health Perspectives table.

Is a garbage disposal louder than a vacuum cleaner?

It can be. The same table lists food disposals at 67 to 93 dBA and vacuum cleaners at 62 to 85 dBA.
