What the numbers mean
How it was measured. HSE representative levels for normal piano practice (60 to 90 dB) and loud piano (70 to 105 dB), both at 3 m.
The piano has a very wide dynamic range. HSE's representative figures, collated from several sources, give normal piano practice at 60 to 90 dB at 3 m with peaks of 105 dB, and loud piano at 70 to 105 dB with peaks of 110 dB.
HSE's illustrative scale places normal piano practice at 80 dB and piano fortissimo around 100 dB. Room size and the lid position make a big difference, so a grand in a small practice room is much louder for the player than the same instrument on a concert stage.
How long is safe?
NIOSH recommends no more than 4 min 43 s a day at 105 dBA (no limit at the quiet end, 60). OSHA's legal limit is 1 h.
| Level | NIOSH limit (85 dBA, 3 dB rule) | OSHA limit (90 dBA, 5 dB rule) | UK/EU 80 dB(A) action value reached after | UK/EU 85 dB(A) action value reached after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 105 dBA | 4 min 43 s | 1 h | 1 min 31 s | 4 min 48 s |
Times are for a whole day’s exposure, with the rest of the day quiet. The workplace limits were written for adults at work, not for children. Work out a mixed day with the noise dose calculator.
Protecting your hearing
Keep the lid down or on the short stick in small rooms, add soft furnishings, and take breaks during long practice sessions. Piano teachers listening for hours a day can use musician's earplugs.
Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.
Compared with sounds nearby
Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).
- Garbage disposal (67–93 dBA): this has about 1.8× its sound energy and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Motorcycle (80 dBA): this has about 1.8× its sound energy and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Noisy toys (70–102 dBA): it has about 2.2× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.3× as loud.
- Amusement arcade (83–89.4 dBA): it has about 2.4× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.3× as loud.
- Normal conversation (55–70 dBA): this has about 100× its energy and sounds about 4.0× as loud.
Questions
Is piano practice loud enough to damage hearing?
Normal practice measures 60 to 90 dB at 3 m according to HSE; long daily sessions at the top of that range in a small room add up.
How loud is a piano at full force?
