How loud is an angle grinder?
HSE research describes angle grinders as typically producing around 90 to 95 dB(A) LAeq. Declared emission levels for two DeWALT cordless small grinders are 83 and 84 dB(A), while a grinder cutting steel studs on construction sites averaged 104.7 dB LAeq at the worker's hearing zone.

What the numbers mean
How it was measured. Low end: DeWALT-declared LpA for two cordless small angle grinders (EN 60745-2-3 / EN 62841). Middle: HSE research summary of typical grinder levels. High end: mean LAeq at the worker's hearing zone while cutting steel studs.
The gap between the figures is mostly about the job. Manufacturer LpA values (83 dB(A) for the DCG409, 84 dB(A) and sound power 95 dB(A) for the DCG418) come from a standard test. HSE research on angle grinding in steel fabrication puts typical levels around LAeq 90 to 95 dB(A), and HSE gives 90 to 95 dB(A) for grinding on a pedestal grinder.
Cutting is louder than grinding. On commercial construction sites, framers using a grinder with a cut-off wheel to cut steel studs had a mean LAeq of 104.7 dB and mean C-weighted peaks of 117.8 dB. HSE's angle-grinding research found that the choice of disc changes the noise: a flap disc gave the lowest noise for grinding and a carbon disc the lowest for cutting.
How long is safe?
NIOSH recommends no more than 5 min 4 s a day at 104.7 dBA (no limit at the quiet end, 83). OSHA's legal limit is 1 h 3 min.
| Level | NIOSH limit (85 dBA, 3 dB rule) | OSHA limit (90 dBA, 5 dB rule) | UK/EU 80 dB(A) action value reached after | UK/EU 85 dB(A) action value reached after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 83 dBA | No limit | No limit | 4 h 1 min | Not reached in 24 h |
| 104.7 dBA | 5 min 4 s | 1 h 3 min | 1 min 38 s | 5 min 9 s |
Times are for a whole day’s exposure, with the rest of the day quiet. The workplace limits were written for adults at work, not for children. Work out a mixed day with the noise dose calculator.
Protecting your hearing
Wear hearing protection whenever grinding or cutting. Choose quieter discs where they suit the job, and consider alternatives such as rebar cutters, which HSE found produced the lowest emissions for cutting rebar.
Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.
Compared with sounds nearby
Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).
- London Underground (80–100 dBA): this has about 2.4× its sound energy and sounds about 1.3× as loud.
- Petrol lawn mower (85.5–95.9 dBA): this has about 2.1× its sound energy and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Leaf blower (86.4–106 dBA): it has about 1.7× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Impact wrench (96–97 dBA): it has about 1.8× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Normal conversation (55–70 dBA): this has about 1,365× its energy and sounds about 8.8× as loud.
Questions
How many decibels is an angle grinder?
Typically around 90 to 95 dB(A) LAeq according to HSE research; cutting steel studs on site averaged 104.7 dB(A) at the worker's hearing zone.
Does the disc make a grinder quieter?
It can. HSE testing found flap discs gave the lowest noise for grinding and a carbon disc the lowest noise for cutting.
