How loud is an impact driver?
DeWALT declares 88 dB(A) (DCF809) and 96 dB(A) (DCF887) emission sound pressure at the operator for its compact impact drivers. On construction sites, framers' impact drivers had a median LAeq of 94.0 dB and a log-transformed mean of 98.5 dB, with C-weighted peaks averaging 117.6 dB.

What the numbers mean
How it was measured. Low end: DeWALT-declared LpA for compact cordless impact drivers (EN 62841-2-2 / EN 60745-2-2). High end: log-mean LAeq from shoulder-worn dosimeters on steel stud framers driving screws on construction sites.
An impact driver looks like a drill but has a rotary hammer mechanism that produces an impact sound each time it engages, many times for every screw. In the 2025 study of steel stud framers it was used for a mean of 206 seconds a day, second only to power saws, with a median LAeq of 94.0 dB and a log-transformed mean of 98.5 dB at the hearing zone.
The authors note the LAeq was one of the lowest among the tools measured, but the peaks (median 111.4 dB, log-transformed mean 117.6 dB C-weighted) and the hundreds of fastenings a day add up. Manufacturer figures for two compact models are 88 dB(A) for the DCF809 and 96 dB(A) for the DCF887.
How long is safe?
NIOSH recommends no more than 21 min a day at 98.5 dBA (4 h at 88). OSHA's legal limit is 2 h 28 min.
| Level | NIOSH limit (85 dBA, 3 dB rule) | OSHA limit (90 dBA, 5 dB rule) | UK/EU 80 dB(A) action value reached after | UK/EU 85 dB(A) action value reached after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 88 dBA | 4 h | No limit | 1 h 16 min | 4 h 1 min |
| 98.5 dBA | 21 min | 2 h 28 min | 6 min 47 s | 21 min |
Times are for a whole day’s exposure, with the rest of the day quiet. The workplace limits were written for adults at work, not for children. Work out a mixed day with the noise dose calculator.
Protecting your hearing
Because exposure comes from many short bursts, it is easy to underestimate. Wear hearing protection for a day of fixing, and prefer a drill/driver for jobs that do not need impact torque.
Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.
Compared with sounds nearby
Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).
- London Underground (80–100 dBA): this has about 2.1× its sound energy and sounds about 1.3× as loud.
- Petrol lawn mower (85.5–95.9 dBA): this has about 1.8× its sound energy and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Tractor (91.7–100 dBA): it has about 1.8× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Leaf blower (86.4–106 dBA): it has about 2× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
- Normal conversation (55–70 dBA): this has about 1,189× its energy and sounds about 8.4× as loud.
Questions
Is an impact driver louder than a drill?
Usually yes, because of the hammering mechanism. DeWALT declares 96 dB(A) for its DCF887 impact driver; on site, impact drivers averaged 98.5 dB(A) (log mean) with peaks near 118 dB(C).
Do I need ear protection for an impact driver?
For sustained use, yes. Framers in one study used them for an average of 206 seconds a day at a median of 94.0 dB(A), with frequent impact peaks.
