How loud is a tractor?

91.7–100dBAat the driver's ear

A study of six tractor models working with tillage implements measured 91.7 to 97.5 dB(A) at the driver's ear level. ASHA's noise chart lists a tractor at 100 dBA. Enclosed cabs make a large difference: in a groundskeeper study, every ride-on machine with an enclosed cab measured below 85 dBA.

What the numbers mean

How it was measured. Noise at the driver's ear level for six tractor models working with five tillage implements in India (91.7 to 97.5 dB(A)); ASHA chart figure of 100 dBA (distance not stated).

Tractor noise comes from the engine, the transmission and whatever implement is working. The Indian study measured drivers on six models pulling five different tillage implements and found 91.7 to 97.5 dB(A) at ear level, alongside hearing loss among the drivers.

Cab design matters. In the North Carolina groundskeeper study, ride-on equipment with an enclosed cab, with windows open or closed, measured 75.5 to 84.2 dBA, while most open-cab machines were 85 dBA or above.

How long is safe?

NIOSH recommends no more than 15 min a day at 100 dBA (1 h 42 min at 91.7). OSHA's legal limit is 2 h.

Times are for a whole day’s exposure, with the rest of the day quiet. The workplace limits were written for adults at work, not for children. Work out a mixed day with the noise dose calculator.

Protecting your hearing

Choose a tractor with a sealed cab and keep doors and windows shut when working. On open tractors, wear earmuffs or plugs for any length of fieldwork.

Earplug and earmuff ratings (NRR in the US, SNR in the UK and EU) are lab figures; real-world protection is usually lower. How to read the ratings.

Compared with sounds nearby

Using midpoints of each range. Energy multiplies by 10 every 10 dB; perceived loudness roughly doubles (why).

  • Loudest snore (world record) (93 dBA max): this has about 1.9× its sound energy and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Impact driver (88–98.5 dBA): this has about 1.8× its sound energy and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Music festival (95.8–101.4 dBA): it has about 1.9× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.2× as loud.
  • Circular saw (89–110.4 dBA): it has about 2.4× the sound energy of this and sounds about 1.3× as loud.
  • Normal conversation (55–70 dBA): this has about 2,163× its energy and sounds about 10.1× as loud.

Questions

How loud is a tractor in decibels?

Measured at the driver's ear, 91.7 to 97.5 dB(A) for six tractor models with tillage implements; ASHA's chart gives 100 dBA.

Does a tractor cab reduce noise?

Yes. Ride-on machines with enclosed cabs measured 75.5 to 84.2 dBA in one study, below the 85 dBA reached by most open-cab machines.
